SYSCO Thursday Summer Series,
Race 1, 6-3-2021
Wind was NNW. Course was Start-1(Buoy 2)-4-Finish. Crew was the excellent, Jon and Jill. We nailed the start. First over the line with Blue Streak and Wildheart in close pursuit. I wanted to get into the channel and use what little current differential is available between the deep channel and the shallow waters. The track below shows the starboard tack to be 2 knots slower than port tack. But the distance we traversed would have been the same so the difference was not that much. We pass astern Blue Streak when we tacked to port to get to the channel. We rounded the windward mark second behind Blue Streak.
I chose not to set the pole as there was quite a bit of north in the westerly wind, but the track does show us much slower for the first part of the downwind leg. We set the pole to port at about half way. Jon had a little trouble setting the pole. It shows in the track when we lost half a knot. The track shows we picked up about a knot setting the pole. Hindsight says to use the pole in summer winds like this.
We rounded the leeward mark third. Behind Blew Streak and Wildheart. We had trouble tacking to starboard from the port setting of the pole. Hindsight says just go to port tack and gain momentum before going to starboard tack after the leeward mark. The track shows this miserable event in yellow at the mark. We finally straightened ourselves out and came in third.
All in all a good night. The only mishap was when Jill activated her inflatable PFD after the race as we were headed for the slip. I still have to figure out if I have charging unit for it or I have to buy one.
BTW, the threaded inserts in the boom fix held. Last week's race, our main sheet parted from the boom. The padeye that connects the main sheet to the boom parted ways. I used a 7/16-14 OD X 1/4-20 ID threaded insert and loktited it into the boom.
