SYSCO Summer Thursday Race 5

July 1, 2021

The course was W, Start-1(Buoy 2)-4-Finish.  Normal summer wind from the west.  Start was off east end of Tomahawk Island.  My normal crew was back.  My repair of the hull cleaner did not hold so we did not clean the hull.  Aventura was a little slower because of the dirty bottom.  Looks like we were about 1/4 knot slower because of the dirty bottom looking at the track below.

We had a decent start on starboard tack.  We held that tack until the entrance to Tomahawk Marina.  Tacked to port and made it to the ramparts under the condos on the Washington side.  Tacked to starboard to make the mark.  Blewstreak, La Dolce Vita, and Wildheart rounded the mark before us.  We were close behind and was able to put up the pole fairly quickly.  We headed toward the Oregon side and shallower waters with clean air.   Managed to stay ahead of La Dolce Vita, was level with Wildheart, but Blewstreak streaked ahead of us all.  About half way to the leeward mark, La Dolce Vita caught up to us.  The wind shifted to the north and our head sail back winded so we dropped our whisker pole, which was a mistake.  We must have been in the lee of La Dolce Vita where the wind backed and caused the sail to luff.  From then on we were fourth.  We rounded the leeward mark fourth and went to port tack until we could make the finish line on starboard tack.
